profDavid Justin BAKIBINGA

Professor David Justin Bakibinga, an internationally renowned corporate and commercial lawyer and academic with more than 46 years of experience, is a Consultant Attorney at GraHaM Advocates, where he contributes to the firm’s strong business and transactional legal services offering.

He specializes in corporate law and governance, capital markets and securities, foreign investment regulation, commercial law, insurance law, international trade law, intellectual property law, and taxation.

Prof. Bakibinga holds several academic, board, and committee appointments, including professor of commercial law at Makerere University, a member of the Presidential Awards Committee, and a fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences, and the World Academy of Sciences.

He was also the dean of the Faculty of Law, the director of the School of Graduate Studies, the deputy vice-chancellor (Finance and Administration), the secretary general of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, and a visiting Professor of law at Uganda Christian University.

Prof. Bakibinga has supervised graduate students and given seminars to lawyers, business and industry, and international associations and conferences worldwide, in addition to teaching commercial law at Ugandan universities Makerere and Christian University, Nigerian universities Jos, Ilorin, Imo State, Ogun State, and Sokoto, and the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute in Tanzania.

His knowledge, insights, and experience as a leading corporate and commercial lawyer add significant value to our clients, especially given Uganda’s current complex and evolving legal and regulatory framework for executives and directors.

He brings a broader perspective to a variety of critical policy and legislative issues, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risk, as well as the risks associated with rapid innovation in banking, finance, insurance, and capital markets.

Prof. Bakibinga has worked as a consultant on legal and regulatory reform projects for the

Ugandan government and its development partners such as the World Bank.

Prof. Bakibinga earned a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from Makerere University (1975), a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre-Kampala (1976), an MA in Business Law from the Council for National Academic Awards in London (1978), and a PhD from Queen Mary University of London (1981). Since 1977, he has served as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda, as well as an arbitrator.

He is a member of the Uganda Law Society, the East African Law Society, and the International Bar Association. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading, having intellectual conversations, watching documentaries, and exercising.
